The “State of AAPI Women Investment Managers” Report uncovers the challenges for AAPI women executives in the investment management industry and how Fenix is driving change to better support underrepresented communities of women in finance.

June 2, 2023 – Fenix Global, Inc. releases the finding of its report detailing the “State of Asian American Women Investment Managers.” The findings within the report provide an analysis of AAPI women in the investment management industry and how they face unique, gender-related challenges, a comprehensive industry review of AAPI women in the asset management industry, challenges with current diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB) initiatives across the investment management industry, insights from institutional LPs and deal makers and solutions to advance AAPI women in the investment industry.

Fenix launched this report to assess how AAPI women investment managers experienced access to capital for investment funds, establish a track record, and navigate race and gender in the careers of AAPI women.

Fenix spent six months speaking with and interviewing male and female fund managers, executives in the investment industry, pension funds, endowments, family offices, Black and Latino investment management professional networks, and experts on AAPI cultural identity. The team sought to understand best practices and advice on creating a network and best-in-class resources to support AAPI women fund managers in the investment management industry.

“It is not the responsibility of Asian women to fix all of the issues that affect Asian women,” says Michael Chui, a partner at McKinsey who co-authored the study. “It is the responsibility of all of us. And to the extent to which there are more men, we who are men need to help address this problem.”

The findings of the report were as follows:

  • Only 6% of investment executive positions are held by AAPI women

  • AAPI women hold only 3% of investment partner positions

  • 77% of investment dollars went to White founders

“My passions lie in creating effective change to propel the trajectory for women and diverse investors and entrepreneurs in the finance industry,” says Diane Yoo, Co-Founder of Fenix Global, Inc. “We must work proactively to combat the odds and improve diversity, equity, and inclusion in the VC industry. My hope is that this study and its findings serve as an awakening on how we can better support AAPI women and lead the next generation of workers to drive true change.”

Fenix Global, Inc. encourages readers to pledge to shape a more diverse and inclusive investment management industry for AAPI women. The Venture Capital, Private Equity, and Hedge fund market combined is estimated at $10 trillion AUM. Help us deploy 1% to AAPI women-led and AAPI women-owned funds by 2026. Your commitment will directly impact all women-led and women-founded investment funds.
