Austin, TX – In recent years, the Mexican drug cartels have increasingly turned to the production and distribution of synthetic opioids, including fentanyl. Fentanyl is a powerful synthetic opioid that is up to 100 times more potent than morphine and is commonly used to treat severe pain in medical settings. However, illicitly produced fentanyl has become a major public health concern, as it has been responsible for a significant portion of overdose deaths in the United States.

 

The Mexican drug cartels have capitalized on the demand for fentanyl by setting up labs to produce the drug. They’ve also developed sophisticated smuggling networks to transport the drug across the border into the United States, and in some cases, the fentanyl is smuggled into the U.S. in bulk quantities and then pressed into pills that are sold on the streets. In other cases, fentanyl is mixed with other drugs, such as heroin or cocaine, to increase their potency and profitability.

 

Border Consultant Jaeson Jones, a retired Captain with the Texas Department of Public Safety’s Intelligence and Counter-Terrorism Division recently reported on the mass seizure of fentanyl along the US-Texas border by the Texas Department of Public Safety, Texas Governor Abbott’s Operation Lone Star, and a lone state trooper. The trooper stopped the cartel at a routine traffic stop, finding and seizing outrageous quantities of fentanyl in its powder form, crafted by hired chemists from the cartels in an effort to weaponize the widespread drug. 

 

Jones reported that the officials stopped 14 pounds of deadly fentanyl from entering the state of Texas along the border; that’s enough fentanyl to kill every Texan in El Paso, Dallas, and Austin combined. Jones noted that this transport was front lined by Cartel De Gapo (CDG), a cartel that’s been heavily degraded over the last 6-8 years. Collaborating with one of the most prolific cartels in the area, Cartel Jalisco New Generation (CJNG), they’ve been able to focus their efforts on moving even more deadly drugs into the United States. 

 

Jaeson Jones emphasized the three types of fentanyl opioids making their rounds: regular fentanyl, para fentanyl (which is mostly what’s being seized by Operation Lone Star), and the deadly sera fentanyl. The Drug Enforcement Administration has focused America’s efforts on CJNG to prevent more mass amounts of the opioid to cross the border, but Jones praises the work of the Department of Public Safety’s work with the lone trooper, reminding listeners of just what good work can be done by a brave individual dedicated to the protection of the border.
